Best wildlife communties

1. Birding.UK
Birding.UK is a small but bustling community for ornithologists. The news forums round up the latest news and views from the bird world, while members can also have a blog hosted on the site, with the best blogs highlighted in a dropdown list. There are forms to discuss the British Trust for Ornithology’s surveys and general forums about garden birds, plus a birding directory where you can recommend trips and days out.

2. Wild About Britain
With more than 29,000 members and nearly half a million posts, the forums at Wild About Britain are the place to go if you’re looking to meet people on the same wavelength as you. Categories are split into British wildlife, environment, photography, outdoor activities and community, with further subcategories within these sections. You can get advice on anything from moth larvae to recycling, and the forum for upcoming meetings and events is particularly useful if you want to pursue your passion.

3. BBC Wildlife Magazine
OK, so it's our sister magazine, but the ever-growing BBC Wildlife forum is a great place to go and ask wildlife questions about British wildlife as well as overseas. Share your sightings, chat about wildlife gardening and discuss the big wildlife stories of the day. Don't forget you could also check out the Countryfile Magazine British Wildlife forum too!

4. Vegetable Gardens
This food-oriented forum has a good wildlife gardening section to answer all your questions. It’s a well populated forum and the majority of posts receive replies. You can post pictures up too, but it’s a shame there are no subcategories under which to post, as it can be tricky to see if there’s already something on a particular topic.

5. Nature UK
If you can get past the rather excessive use of smiley faces, you’ll find these online forums really useful. Topics are split into sensible categories such as moths, flowers and seas and shores. But there are also more inventive forums including your most memorable wildlife encounters and wildlife hospital. There’s a big social scene, and lots of off-subject forums with space to post poetry and creative writing. You can also post your blog up on the site.

The best?

I have visited all of these sites and there is very little recent activity on some of them. For me, the ideal forum would consist of threads with a high turnover of polite but lively posts. This requires a good number of members to be online at any one time (mixed with a sensible degree of moderation).

The software chosen must be easy to use and is probably the major factor dictating the number of members willing to visit the forum at any one time. Uploading pictures should be straightforward. And in order to continue a conversation, the ability to see threads that you have posted on and which contain unread posts is almost a necessity in my opinion. Most of the forums have so far let me down on these points.

No forum is ideal though. I wondered if anyone had any views as to their personal favourites.

And why is "Friends of Nature" is missing? In my opinion it is one of the better ones.
