Force of nature
By: Brian Vigurs
Where: High Force, County Durham
“Over the New Year holidays we had a visit from our nephew and his daughter, who live in Johannesburg, South Africa. His daughter had never seen snow and was really looking forward to seeing some while in the UK. Sadly for them no snow was forecast, but instead we took them on a trip to High Force, where the frost was a delight to view and was as close to snow as we could get.”

Donkey duo
By: Richard Williams
Where: Shropshire/Staffordshire border
“Smokey and William are owned by the Donkey Sanctuary in Devon, but they live with my in-laws. They are a regular photographic subject but it’s rare for them to stand in the right place, looking in the same direction!”

Frozen wonder
By: Sharon Ayres
Where: Cotswold Water Park, Gloucestershire
“My partner and I went for a walk in sub zero temperatures early in January and we decided to go round a few of the lakes at the Cotswold Water Park. They were all frozen over and looked very pretty.”

Late lunch
By: Jan Collins
Where: Ambleside, Cumbria
“We went to visit the Lake District last year and were strolling around Ambleside one late afternoon when this sparrowhawk took out a pigeon in flight. It then proceeded to eat it among crowds of onlookers in the town centre.”

Hill sheep blues
By: Wendy Hutchinson
Where: West Allen Valley, Northumberland
“Early one morning I was feeding traditional Swaledale ewes in the West Allen Valley. Snow began to fall, the sheep gathered to be fed and the only sound was their bleating. What a wonderful way to start the day.”
