Captivating castle

“Looking like every child’s idea of a toy castle, Rockingham makes an impressive sight, standing on the escarpment looking over the East Midlands. I decided that lying flat on the grass (which was damp!) would add to the impression of authority that was intended by the builders, more than 900 years ago.”

Balancing act

“As the farm manager of the Royal Veterinary College’s Boltons Park Farm, I have taken hundreds of sheep pictures this year, but I think this one best captures the wonderful mothering instincts of the ewes. Her facial expression highlights what great mothers sheep can be. She
is a Mule, full of milk, and the two-week-old lambs are Texel crosses.”

Hitching a ride

“A queen bee recently flew into my workshop and because she was so big I took some photos. When I returned home I looked at my computer and noticed the strange bubbles on her back. I later found out that they’re the harmless mite Parasitellus fucorum, which ride
on the queen until she finds her new nest.”

Tree of life

“This photo was taken at Kingston Lacy House. While walking around the grounds we came across this tree stump that had been left to rot down to provide shelter for insects. It is absolutely riddled with holes that the woodpeckers have made while searching for food.”

Red poser

“I watched red squirrels from the cottage window every day, feeding from a food box on the tree. I tried to photograph them with my 135mm lens but I got poor results, so I decided to try to get close enough to them to get a good shot. I spent about three hours moving closer to the red squirrels and taking shots without scaring them off until I captured this picture.”
