Britain’s best… local organic veg box schemes

Luddesdown Organic Farm, Kent
This scheme delivers a weekly box of fresh, local, organic fruit or vegetables delivered direct to you door. All boxes contain potatoes, carrots and onions, with a further five seasonal vegetables added. The website shows which season produce you’ll be getting each week.

Riverford Organic, Devon
Based at Wash Farm in Buckfastleigh, Devon, Riverford Organic is a cooperative of farms that delivers fresh vegetables, meat, eggs, milk, wine and fruit across the country. The man behind the scheme, Guy Watson, was voted one of our top 20 British food heroes in the current issue. Keep an eye on the website as box contents change weekly.

Howbarrow Organic Farm, Cumbria
Based in Cartmel, Grange-over-Sands, this 13-acre smallholding has been delivering a box scheme in the local area since 1998. Now sending its produce across Cumbria, a typical box might include lamb, beef, turkey, eggs, vegetables and medicinal herbs. Howbarrow has recently teamed up with the Farmshed, another family run organic business from Lancashire, expanding its veg growing facilities even further.

Keveral Farm, Cornwall
Residents in south-east Cornwall can now enjoy the same locally grown organic fruit and veg as guests at Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen Cornwall restaurant, both of which are supplied by growers at Keveral, Buttervilla and Skye Grove farms. Coffee, eggs, preserves and fresh bread made at Fifteen’s in-house bakery are also available.

East Coast Organics, Edinburgh
Growers at this 20-year-old farm boast not just organic produce but biodynamic produce, which means, among other things, that the entire farm relies on home produced compost, manure and animal feeds, for even more nutritious fruit and veg. Delivering to customers in Edinburgh, Midlothian and East Lothian, East Coast Organics also supply herbs, bread, cheese and eggs.
